Paimpol, in Breton "Penn Poul", a small port in Côtes d’Armor, has been recognised as a "Terre de Bretagne" region since 1300. Paimpol is an old fortified town. Very few of the defences survive, but the town was an important port during the period of the "Grand Pêche" fishing expeditions. The schooners that called in here were the lifeblood of the town, ensuring its prosperity with their cargos of salt, supplies and mail.
The town features some beautiful squares, buildings and monuments, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, and today this little pleasure-boat port lives from tourism, oyster farming, fishing and market gardening.
